1. So perfect and flawless that a bird wouldn't dare chip at it with its beak.
2. Too hard/resilient to be bored into by said proboscis-hammering.
Flickers sometimes make a loud hammering noise on sheet-metal in an attempt to drive other birds away, even though they are obviously aware that metal --- unlike wood --- is impeckable.
