othering

the act of alienating from the group; not including someone because they are different
The kids in the choir are always othering the ones that don't sing very well; they won't let them sit at the same lunch table.
Othering people who aren't like you isn't cool; you may be losing out on a new friend with your close-minded fears of anything different from what you are used to; and besides, it's mean.

Racial Othering

Racial othering is when white people are treated as the norm, while Black, Indigenous, and people of color are treated as “different.”It stems from a phenomenon called the white default, which defines white people as the standard for behavior, appearance, and culture.

It bothers me when people ask me "Where are you REALLY from?" It's a form of racial othering.

ottering

Initially appears to be an activity without purpose; after closer examination, it is a mundane task or job done with playful enjoyment.
Jimmy's wadding up his dirty clothes, 'shooting hoops' into the laundry basket.

Jimmy's mom: "Will you stop ottering and bring me that hamper! I need to get the laundry done!"

sea ottering

"Sea ottering" is to cuddle and fall asleep with a partner.

This is because sea otters often rest together in 'rafts' and hold paws so that they don't float away from their group, as seen in the popular YouTube video "Otters holding hands" by user cynthiaholmes.
Girl: Sea otters are so cute. Did you know they hold paws when they sleep to keep from floating away from eachother?

Boy: Haha no I never knew that, that's actually pretty cute.

Girl: Isn't it!

Boy: Yeah, and hey, maybe we can 'sea otter' sometime, yeah?

Girl: Okay! I look forward to sea ottering with you. *wink

Ottering

Verb

The act of sitting in random areas and posing like the aquatic mammal. Not as popular as Planking or Owling but stay tuned...all of the kids are doing it.

Truly just a form of one-upmanship in the world of photo taking.
Man1: Is Mikaila owling?

Man2: Nope; she just invented Ottering

Man1: Strength
