From early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic spakr wise, quiet, gentle, Old Swedish spaker wise, quiet, gentle, peaceful (Swedish spak), Old Danish spak, spag quiet, gentle (Danish spag)), perhaps from the same Indo-European base as Croatian paziti to give heed to.
