'lmo' is just a shorter and easier to write version of 'lmao': laughing my ass off.
It is preferable over its extended version due to the fact that 'l','m' and 'o' are present near each other and can be typed with one hand only. 'a', however, is quite far and would require your other hand too, which might not be free.
