A band that recieves a lot of hate from most self-proclaimed metalheads for some unknown reason. Because they're too commercial? Because they have no talent? Because they got a LOT of band members?? Because they wear MASKS??
Well, I will go ahead and reply to these:
1. Too commercial
Well, let me ask you something. When has anyone really played a Slipknot song on TV, the radio, or anything else?? Slipknot did not rely on mainstream help to get popular. They simply became loved by their fans and with their help, they became this famous. And what's wrong with a band being popular? Why exactly does being popular mean that a band sucks? Your "Metallica" and "Slayer" are no less famous than Slipknot, and no less commercial either, for that matter. But they're still kickass bands. So, who cares??
2. No talent
This is the most bullshit thing anyone can say about Slipknot. Go ahead and actually LISTEN to their songs for once, idiots. While it may not sound like it at first, there IS a lot of technical proficiency involved in playing those riffs. And, you say they got no guitar solos? I can name three:
1. Vermillion
2. Welcome
3. Pulse of the Maggots
Go ahead. Listen to them. Guitar solos right in your face. If that's not talent, then I don't know what is.
3. Lots of band members
Yes, I DO agree that some of them are quite useless, but they still help to make the music the way it sounds, even if it's a simple drum crash by Clown. They also help add to the band's image. And to those of you who say image is just a sellout device to get more money, then let me ask you - what bands besides grunge bands have ever not given a damn about image? Even Iron Maiden had quite an image to go with their music, and they're one of the greatest metal bands around. Who cares about how many members a band has, or what they look like? If they rock hard and please the fans, isn't that all that matters?
4. Masks
Most of the band members have shown themselves without the masks by now. So therefore, you can't say it's to "hide their ugliness" or "hide in embarrassment because they know they suck", which they don't anyway. Lead singer Corey Taylor and guitarist James Root also play in a second band called Stone Sour, and they don't wear masks there. Once again, the masks in Slipknot just add to the image. It shouldn't matter any more than the music.
In conclusion, Slipknot is an amazing, talented band that deserves more respect from metalheads everywhere. Just because they're a "new" band doesn't mean they suck. Take the time to listen to them, and you'll see what I mean.

Idiot: Pff Slipknot is such a fake nu-metal band! They've got no talent and hide their ugliness with stupid goth-wannabe masks!
Non-idiot: You're completely wrong. First of all, Slipknot has lots of talent, and if you listen to their new album, you'll actually understand (or maybe not >_> ). And second of all, they've all shown their faces already. They're not hiding anything.
Idiot: .. but.. 80s metal is the only good music around!
Non-idiot: It IS good, but it's not the ONLY good music. Go and expand your horizon, you moron.

Horrible music. I have some good reasons for having this opinion too.
I used to be around rap all the time, and really.. it all sounded the same. Same beat all the time, and very identical voices (seeing as most rappers are black and have similar voices). The only thing that really changes are the sound effects in the back. Not only that, but most mainstream rap is about, yup - you got it: Sex, drugs, money, violence, racism against whites, and gangsta life. I'm not stereotyping, because I KNOW not all rap is about this. But really.. how many examples can you give besides people such as 2pac, Kayne West or Mos Def?
2pac wasn't really any different from today's rappers. He too made songs about life in the ghettos, and being a gangsta. He made songs about shooting cops, and committing other various crimes. These really aren't some standards I'd want to live by. Wouldn't you agree? And Kayne West... he recently exposed his racist personality by talking about how whites don't care about black people, and how he thinks that everything that happens is because of white people. Mos Def might've been one of the only rappers who did not follow all these stereotypes, but there are few people who listen to him compared to people who listen to shit like 50 Cent, Ludacris, or Nelly.
If you listened to most of today's rap, the songs will always be about either one of the themes mentioned above, but mostly sex. Actual lines in some rap songs include: "I'm in love with a stripper", "It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes", "Shake that ass girl", "I'll let you lick the lollipop", and "Your ass is a masterpiece". I could probably come up with lots more examples if I continued looking. Just goes to show you what most rap is made of.
So therefore, to those of you who are trying to defend rap, why bother? You're telling us to listen to the good stuff like 2pac, Kayne West, Mos Def, etc., but however, you listen to all that gangsta rap shit at the same time. Go out in public, and look around you. See how many people have been possessed by this music. They act like they're "the shit", use curse words in all of their sentences, wear G-Unit clothes, and call themselves "gangstas". If people really listened to the stuff you're telling them to listen to, why do we have so many people who listen to OTHER stuff and follow THEIR standards?
One more thing. To those who defend rap and bash rock/metal, SHUT UP. I'm not stereotyping rap, but YOU'RE stereotyping rock. There are VERY few bands who, as you call it, smash their instruments or scream at the top of their lungs like psychotic lunatics. The bands who do that are usually black metal bands, and black metal is virtually unknown by the public. The same goes for bands who, once again as you call it, make songs about Satan, blood, death, and all those other gruesome themes. That's death metal, which isn't any more popular than black metal. Sure, some of today's modern popular bands DO talk about this stuff, and they DO smash their instruments and scream, and yea, we all know those bands suck, just like 50 Cent does as a rapper. But they don't reflect on the ENTIRE genre. Whereas with rap, almost 2/3 of the genre is about the stereotypical stuff. Seriously, if you're going to attack something, at least be accurate with it.

Face it, rap sucks. The only talent it takes to make rap is to write lots of words and keep it in harmony with the beat. Too bad the words that are used are almost always about sex, drugs, money, and gangstas. I respect those who do not write about this stuff, and actually make their words poetry, but there are few artists who did this.
The only thing rap has going for it is that it's good music to dance to, whereas you can't do that with most rock. However, rock takes lots more talent. You need cooperation of several people to make just ONE song, while rappers don't need anyone - thus his/her job is easier. You need to learn to play instruments, while a rapper only needs to know how to talk/sing on the mic, which in fact IS quite easy to do. Not only that, but rock music is actually VARIED. Rap.. all you have is about 2 or 3 different beats with different sound effects in the back, which can be played by pushing buttons on a machine. NIIICE.

A name given to a person based on his/her fashion sense or musical tastes by people who think that:
A. Just because someone is wearing clothes from Hot Topic it means that they're trying to be goth, or
B. Just because someone listens to The Ramones it means that they're trying to be punk.
There are some more examples, but these are some of the more common ones. Most people that call others posers are saying that these people are trying to be goths or punks. These people never consider that maybe, just maybe.. these guys simply like the clothes or music!
It has nothing to do with what they want to BE, but simply what they LIKE, so they go ahead and do it. It's like assuming that just because a white guy wants to rap, that he's automatically a wigger. Rap doesn't automatically mean you're gonna speak in ebonics and rap about bitches and hoes, or how "gangsta" you are. Only when that IS the case.. you can go and call him a wigger, but otherwise, no.
It's the same with these so-called "goths" and "punks". A stud-belt from Hot Topic doesn't mean that person slits his wrists and cries all day because his life sucks, nor does liking the band Green Day mean that person wants to rebel against society, get a mohawk, and tell everyone else to fuck off.
However.. the easiest way to tell a true poser from a non-poser would be that, if a poser actually gets called a poser, he/she'd overreact quite angrily and surprised.

Wigger: omg look at dat wannabe goth over der wit dose chain pants from Hot Topic lol ur such a goth poser
Non-Idiot: Umm.. no, actually I got these pants because I thought they look cool. Do you have a problem with that?
Wigger: Yea I do!! I'm an awesum rapper wit all mah hoes and rims, who says I'm from da street even tho I wuz raised in a 6-story mansion!!
Non-Idiot: Well in that case, go and tell someone to yell at you instead of coming here like an idiot and calling me a poser... you poser.
Wigger: omg stfu I fukkin hate u u wannabe goth bitch go slit ur wrists u fag

A really cool symphonic black metal band from Norway.
Sure, they're not traditional black metal like bands such as Bathory or Emperor, and their lyrics can be somewhat.. crazy.. but the music is intense and awesome.
So, before all of you start yelling at me and calling me some sort of evil goth Satan-worshipper.. first of all, I'm Christian and I don't worship Satan, and second of all, I'm not trying to relate to their lyrics - I just like their music. If I wanted to find some good meaning in lyrics, I'd look at bands like Stratovarius or HIM, both of which are also really good.
So once again, Dimmu Borgir is an awesome band, and for those of you who want some nice heavy metal, I suggest checking these guys out.

If you were to ask an average teenage girl who listens to pop punk WHY she likes certain pop punk bands, the answer you'll most likely get is that she thinks the guys in the band are "hot."
Seriously. When was the last time you heard a girl say she liked Fall Out Boy without also saying that "Pete Wentz is liek omfg SOO HAWT!!1!"? It's the same with bands like Green Day, My Chemical Romance, or any others that are popular right now.
If the bands' fans would learn to appreciate them for their musical talent rather than their members' looks, then maybe there wouldn't be so many idiots making the band look like a bunch of terrible no-talent sellouts (or, in fact, actually MAKING them terrible no-talent sellouts).

Guy: So I see you like Fall Out Boy. May I ask why?
Pop Punk fangirl: OMFG becuz Pete Wentz is liek SOOOO HAWT!1! Hes in that band and liek hes totally SEXII!1!
Guy: ... Ok... and what about their music??
Pop Punk fangirl: Ohh yes!! Patrick Stump's voice is SOOOO WONDERFUL!!! Ahhh.. *swoons*
Guy: -_- wait here while I go get a heavy object...
