Ahh...the dyed yellow hair, the big socks, the bleeding-edge mobile phone. We all love Kogals, those young Japanese schoolies who hang around in gangs everywhere from Osaka to Oxford. It makes life just that little bit easier to take, watching them with their Badtz Maru handbags and Domo-kun Alice bands.

Strange, tangy supposedly 'soft' drink from Japan which, according to the blurb on the can, replaces the electrolytes lost through perspiration.
The sensation of actually drinking the stuff is like putting your tongue on the twin terminals of a 9v. battery.

Pocari Sweat is Japanese Coke to Calpis' Pepsi.

Urban legend from mid-90's Japan about a videotape with weird imagery contained on it. If you watch the tape you then recieve a phone call telling you you will be dead in a week. Basis for a series of novels by the writer Koji Suzuki, filmed as Ring, Rasen, Ring 2 and Birthday. Remade in both Korea and America.

Fine Japanese author of urban magic realism. Novels such as 'Dance, Dance, Dance' and 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' have made Murakami one of the most popular writers in his native country with young people. His story of young love in the 1960's 'Norwegian Wood' was a sensation when it was published in the 1980's.

Japanese sweet derived from the classic Pocky Stick. A larger breadstick that the pocky covered in a white sort-of-chocolate substance.
Delicious, but not up to the standards of Pocky classic.

Pocky sticks are Japanese breadsticks covered in a tasty almost-chocolate coating. Popular with Wapanese in the west, as well as anime Otaku and guys out to impress Japanese girls. (It doesn't work, incidentally)

There are all kinds of pocky variants including savoury versions and the amusingly named White Lolita - giant Pocky with white chocolate.

Did you see the way that fat fuck anime nerd downed that pocky stick?
