Usually in normal conversations stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease however in the 90s, kids referred it to a shitty gaming device that barely worked. People often got confused about this and it often led to hilarious situations such as the one in the example.

Everyone: Cool!

Steve: yeah the new STD sounds amazing! I already have many STD’s but when the new one comes out, I’m buying it immediately.
John: same, I have 3 STD’s and I can’t wait for another one.

Sexually Transmitted Disease. Anyone can get one, even virgins. Most common STDs are passed through skin contact, saliva, breast milk, & bodily fluids. You don't have to be a "nasty slut" to get an STD. It only takes 1 sexual experience...or with Herpes, alls you have to do is touch someone who has the virus on their skin at that point and area.
