The 1955 Le Mans disaster is the only such instance of a sport ender actually happening, as it led to the cancellation of auto racing in multiple countries for some time. The term is usually used hyperbolically and figuratively in online circles to refer to an impending accident in a chaotic race in which many cars would be involved, especially those in which the safety of spectators would be endangered.

Carson Hocevar is leading the outside lane at Talladega with 10 to go, if he makes one bad block we could have a sport ender on our hands.
