nigger chasers

When you break the sticks off of bottle rockets, creating a condition where lighting them causes them to fly in all directions, causing widespread panic in a somewhat confined space.
Q: How was camping?

A: It was pretty fun - until Arlo threw a handful of nigger chasers into the bonfire, then all hell broke loose

nigger chaser

A bottle rocket, minus the wooden stick to hold it up. When lit off, the firecracker takes off in a random direction, and follows an unpredictable trajectory. The term "nigger chaser" is a nickname given to the bottle rocket in the early 40's. The reason this nickname was chosen can be left to the spectator's imagination.

You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
