Tyranny of Social Media

The specific form of digital tyranny exerted by social media platforms, characterised by algorithmic curation, viral mobs, performative outrage, and the constant pressure to perform identity for an audience. Under this tyranny, users are trapped in feedback loops of validation and shame, where a single misstep can trigger mass harassment or cancellation. Platforms’ design exploits psychological vulnerabilities, creating addiction, anxiety, and social comparison. The tyranny also lies in how social media redefines sociality: relationships become metrics, communication becomes performance, and genuine connection is displaced by the pursuit of likes.
Example: “She spent hours crafting a post, then felt crushed when it got no engagement—the tyranny of social media, where human worth is algorithmically measured and found wanting.”
