Tyranny of National Borders

The oppressive system of border controls that restricts human movement based on birthplace, wealth, and nationality. Borders are not natural features; they are political constructions enforced by walls, surveillance, detention, and deportation. The tyranny lies in how borders determine life chances: some people can travel freely, while others are trapped in poverty, violence, or climate disaster. The system is upheld by nationalist ideologies that treat border enforcement as a sacred duty, while ignoring the violence it produces. Even when borders are called “sovereign rights,” they remain instruments of inequality and suffering.
Example: “He watched refugees drown on the news and said ‘we have to protect our borders’—the tyranny of national borders, treating a line drawn on a map as more valuable than human lives.”
