Tag Wars
In Detroit and broader graffiti culture, “tag wars” refer to ongoing, competitive graffiti battles between rival tagger crews or street gangs. These conflicts involve repeatedly crossing out, defacing, or painting over each other’s tags to assert dominance, claim territory, and build reputation. Tag wars can escalate over time, turning local disputes into highly visible street conflicts tied to identity, respect, and neighborhood presence. A widely cited example is the clash between W7M/ScoreGang-affiliated Crips and the Black P. Stone Nation, which gained public attention after “Tiny Joker” (Zahid Sekou) spoke with The Detroit News about how gang graffiti is often misunderstood.
“Tag wars were lowkey until the Crips from Five Points (ScoreGang) started putting it everywhere.” — Detroiter
