Sandia Rule

The Sandia Rule is a social and ethical guideline that blends the principles of the Platinum Rule (treat others as they want to be treated) and the Golden Rule (treat others as you would like to be treated). It prioritizes understanding and respecting others' preferences and desires, but shifts back to the Golden Rule when there's a conflict with one's own needs and boundaries. This rule is named after the Sandia alloy, a durable mix of platinum and gold, symbolizing the blend of empathy for others with self-care.

The term "Sandia Rule" is inspired by the Sandia alloy, a blend of 90% platinum and 10% gold, known for its exceptional durability and resistance to wear. Just as the alloy represents a strong combination of two valuable elements, the Sandia Rule symbolizes a balanced approach to interpersonal relationships, combining empathy and adaptability with personal well-being and self-respect.
When I realized that accommodating my friend's preference for late-night hangouts was affecting my sleep schedule, I decided to follow the Sandia Rule and proposed an earlier time that worked for both of us.

At work, I apply the Sandia Rule: I try to adapt to my colleagues' work styles, but I also make sure to set clear boundaries so my own productivity isn't compromised.
