Push in the stops

To become completely silent or to tell a group to stop talking immediately.
The phrase is a humorous play on the pipe organ. While organists commonly say "pull out all the stops" to activate as many ranks as possible for the loudest, fullest sound, the expression "push in the stops" imagines pushing every stop back in, leaving the organ with no selected stops—and therefore no sound. It is used metaphorically to mean "absolute silence."
