Medication Gambit

A rhetorical tactic where someone attempts to derail a discussion by suggesting that a speaker needs psychiatric medication.

This tactic weaponizes mental health stigma to try to invalidate the speaker and shut down further discussion. In addition, the speaker could be baited into an emotional reaction, which would then be pointed to as evidence of instability.

The gambit is to take the risk of appearing biased or insulting, with the hope of discrediting the speaker and deterring others from giving serious consideration to the topic.

1: “In an online forum where the existence of gangstalking was being challenged, Jim pointed out that there are historical examples of the practice. Someone then told him to seek psychiatric treatment and take medication. Jim recognized this Medication Gambit and called it out.”
