MAHENDRADA

Mahendrada is the last name of certain Indian Brahmins. The Mahendradas were originally Rapurohits (priests to kings and royals). After marrying into royal families, they bore the names Mahindra or Mahendra or Mahendar. These people mostly belonged to the Kshatriya Brahmana or Brahmana castes in Hindu Varna.

The word Mahendrada literally means the descendant of the great Indra who is believed to be the king of gods in Hindu Mythology.

After alliances between the Rajpurohits and the royal families occurred, a certain part of their lineage came to be known as Suryavanshi or Sooryavanshi(descendants of the sun).

This surname is now bore by mostly south Indian Tamil and Dravida Brahmins.
