Liliuokalani

The last monarch of Hawaii. She was also the only queen regnant.

Her fame mostly comes from her downfall. In 1893, a pro-American coup was launched against Queen Liliʻuokalani by the upper class, causing her position to be abolished. Liliʻuokalani supporters tried multiple times to reinstate her, but ultimately failed in doing so. Not too long afterwards, the United States annexed Hawaii as a territory. She lived the rest of her life as a private citizen until her death in 1917.
Did you also know Liliuokalani was the sister of her predecessor, King Kalakaua?
