Janus Moment

The brief perceptual shift experienced by an observer when a performer, livestreamer, actor, presenter, or content creator becomes visibly aware of their own audience, camera, playback feed, or presentation, causing the observer's suspension of disbelief to collapse. For a moment, the observer simultaneously perceives both the content and the mechanism by which the content is being performed.

Unlike a traditional fourth-wall break, a Janus Moment does not require the performer to directly acknowledge the audience. It occurs when the audience becomes aware that the performer is themselves aware of being watched, revealing both sides of the performance at once.

Etymology

From the Roman god Janus, traditionally depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. The term describes the uncanny instant when a performer appears to exist in two perspectives simultaneously: experiencing the moment from within while also observing it from the audience's point of view.

Related: Malkovich Effect

The uncanny perception of a person in the brief interval between ordinary existence and active performance, causing the observer to momentarily see the actor, the character, and the human being simultaneously.
"The ASMR artist kept softly whispering into the microphone until she glanced at her preview monitor. Instantly it became a Janus Moment. I stopped feeling like I was being spoken to and started noticing that I was watching someone perform being soothing."

"The actor briefly looked toward the camera before delivering his line. It wasn't a fourth-wall break exactly, but it triggered a Janus Moment."

"He checked the delayed playback of his own livestream and suddenly the illusion vanished. Clinical Janus Moment."

Brought to public attention by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein in the book on the fall of Richard Nixon, All The President’s Men, ratfucker was Nixon’s term for a political operative who sows chaos among opponents; an agent provocateur. It is thought to have originated among campus political rivalries at USC, and seems to have some usage in the US military.
Along with Nixon’s other ratfuckers, Roger Stone caused fights at otherwise peaceful Democratic Party protests to generate a false narrative that the Democrats were violent and dangerous.
