Stating the obvious is also known as a "forelitive" statement. Derived from the saying "for
real?"
When someone says
something that points out the obvious, it would be considered a forelitive statement. It also can be a generic response to someone else who says
something about a subject. A forelitive response.
A forelitive statement: i.e. "Be careful when you watch her." Obviously, if you'
re taking care of someone, you'
re going to be careful. Especially, a baby. Do you think if it wasn't said, would you NOT be careful?
A forelitive response: STATEMENT: "I'm trying my hardest." RESPONSE: "Well,
everyone tries their hardest."
Basically, a meaningless response that doesn't give any consolation to the statement.
