Debunking Orthodoxy
The established, institutionalized set of debunking beliefs and practices that dominate skeptic communities, enforced through social pressure, platform moderation, and the marginalization of dissenters. Debunking orthodoxy determines what topics are worthy of debunking, what methods are legitimate, and what tone is acceptable. It often canonizes certain debunkers as heroes and blacklists others as “pseudoskeptics” or “apologists.” Like all orthodoxies, it provides community and identity, but it also resists self‑correction and punishes heresy.
Example: “The forum had an official list of ‘debunked’ topics that members were forbidden to discuss—debunking orthodoxy, treating consensus as censorship.”
