avoidant personality disorder

avoidant personality disorder is a condition often characterized by: hypersensitivity to perceived or real rejection and a pervasive, extremely low self-esteem.
this inevitably leads to intense social inhibition to the point where the avoidant person tends to avoid social contact with all but those whom he knows for certain will not reject him.
this, in turn, can lead to the avoidant person compensating for his/her lack of social interaction by constructing a complex "fantasy" world, through which he experiences those things that he feels himself incapable of experiencing in real life (love, acceptance, etc.).
it may also lead the avoidant person to assume a defensive position while in contact with others, so he can reject others before they reject him.

treatment is usually therapy.
a person with avoidant personality disorder believes himself to be so personally unappealing that he withdraws from social life, so as to avoid the pain of rejection. this, in turn, causes others to perceive him as uninterested in social life, and they may ignore or even ridicule him. this, of course, reinforces the avoidant's beliefs that he is inferior, and leads him to further withdrawl.

avoidant personality disorder may often be connected to clinical depression.

Avoidant Personality Disorder

Avoidant Personality Disorder, sometimes abbreviated as AVPD, is a relatively rare personality disorder that makes a person abnormally...well, avoidant.
Symptoms of Avoidant Personality Disorder can include:
-Extreme sensitivity to criticism or rejection, even if done in a nice way
-Social isolation, due to only hanging out with people who will accept them and avoiding people who are critical

-Fear of conflict; not voicing complaints, lest the subject(s) of the complaint react harshly
-Extremely low self-esteem; lower than that of a person suffering from depression
-Crippling shyness

-Being easily embarrassed or flustered
-Over-explaining a lot to avoid any potential misunderstandings
-Being unresponsive to any forms of communication (particularly verbal communication), especially if they are unhappy with someone, or vice versa
-Having trouble asking for help
-Extreme indecisiveness

Mental and personality disorders are different for everyone, but it doesn't make them any less serious.

trucker's tan

A sunburn or suntan focused on the left arm. It is caused by the left side of the body being the only half that gets exposed to sunlight while driving. Presumably, it would be located on the right side of the body in countries where they drive on the left side of the road.
I had a trucker's tan after driving for 10 straight hours on a sunny day.

British slang for a scientist or technical expert, esp . when the speaker is not certain of the expert’s specific field of study. Not necessarily derogatory, but typically used by persons without a technical background. In the US, the equivalent would be “egghead”, “squint”, or “geek.”

Origin of the word is unknown. Started sometime in World War 2. Given the typical evolution of British slang, could easily have started because what these experts did was confusing or “baffling” to the common person.
