Autumn Lock

An autumn lock is the hair style often worn by members of the emo culture. Often called generically "emo hair". It is most often recognized by long bangs, parted on the side, that cover one eye.

Characteristics of Emo Hair Styles

* What an emo style is varies for each person wearing it, and the exact same style worn by one individual may be an emo look, but if worn by someone else it may be considered goth or punk. In general, however, emo styles do share certain characteristics.

1. Loose styles that typically are not restrained by hair accessories or elaborate coifs, though heavy hair products may be needed to style the look.
2. Long bangs that may be worn obscuring the eye (left or right is up to the individual’s preference) or swept to the side. Bangs may also be straight across the forehead, but are generally longer than for other hair styles, and not every emo style has bangs.
3. A deliberately messy look that reflects the individual’s personal style. An emo style may be somewhat unruly, and many teens who wear emo styles will change their look from day to day to reflect their current state of mind.

You think me an old fogeyand an old tory, his thoughtful voice said. I saw three generations since O’Connel’s time. I remember the famine. Do you know that the orange lodges agitated for repeal of the union twenty years before O’Connel did or before the prelates of your communion denounced him as a demagogue? You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
