When you have been taken out with out realizing it is a date. After this unknown date you are told it was a date.

One day after crew I caught a bite to eat with a guy friend and had a nice long conversation. Needless to say later in the night I was caught off guard...

An ambush date happens when you're on a date with someone, and unexpectedly their friends, family members, or children show up, expecting to join the date and have you cover all the expenses.

I recently went on a date with a girl I met online, and she pulled an ambush date on me when a couple of her friends showed up, ordered food and drinks, and assumed I would cover the bill for everything.
