Emo

Ok, I really want to get this straight. The ORIGINAL definition of "emo" can be broken down like this:

"Emo" is short for "emotive hardcore," or "emotional harcore." The word "hardcore" is referring to hardcore punk music. Emo is a form of hardcore punk music, although after different "waves" of emo coming and going through the years, there are still some bands that differ from the original emo music that can still be defined as emo.

NOW-
the word "emo" is being used to describe the current sub-culture of the supposed genre of music that is emo, although this current subculture is often found not to listen to real emo music. It is actually true that the original subculture of emo looked completely different from what our perception is now.

Just because somebody dresses or looks "emo" doesn't mean that they cut themselves and act sad all the time. And if they do, it's not always necessarily to get attention. Depression is a real thing and should be taken seriously.

"Emo" kids should be given the same respect that is given to any other kind of person, because we are all people and deserve equal treatment, regardless of how we look and what music we listen to.
NOT real emo bands:

EMO

Life is either what you make of it or what you do not make of it. IF you're happy going thru life sad and that's your thing, OK...BUT there is a lot more out there if your attitude is that "the glass is half full" - be positive. Just cause bad stuff happened to you, don't internalize it to the point where you cannot see the good stuff all around you. Personally, I find most emo's a downer who work hard at exuding bad vibes.
emo - Trying to exude no perceptible positive emotion, trying to be sad, and internalizing their feelings. Spending time writing in a journal, creating poetry, etc. Not trying to make a contribution to the world, only themselves (ie: vanity and self-centered behavior). Ask a question - "Where does this get me...where does this help me grow as an individual?"

1) For whatever reason, a highly controversial word in youth culture and popular culture circles. Probably the definition that can be the most agreed upon is that side of post-hardcore which is melodic and accessible enough for mainstream pop audiences to enjoy. It should be taken into account that most bands who play this type of music are divorced from the art punk tendencies of many of the pioneering post-hardcore bands from the 1980s and 1990s.

2) "Emo" can also refer to the youth subculture that is centered around this particular niche of post-hardcore described in definition 1, which, much like the punk, goth, and hippie subcultures that preceded it, is identifiable by a particular fashion sense (in this case often straight, dyed black hair combed to one side to the point of being asymmetrical in appearance, also horn-rimmed or rectangular eyewear). Unlike the punk and hippie subcultures, at least, there are really no identifiable political or ideological concerns of the Emo subculture, and it is primarily defined by music purchasing habits and outward appearance. However, many members of the Emo subculture, often referred to as emo kids, are often seen as suicidal or suffering from other psychological problems, regardless of whether or not they actually are.

3) Archaically at least to some degree, "emo" is sometimes used to describe nearly all post-hardcore, particularly that which derives stylistically from the sounds pioneered by a number of bands from Washington DC and Maryland in the mid-to-late 1980s. It should be noted, though, that "emo" (then "emocore") was a derogatory term applied to the earliest of these bands by their detractors.
1) It is disputed by few that Jimmy Eat World and Braid are emo bands.

2) In some regions, the emo subculture is cause for moral panic.

3) Guy Picciotto, of pioneering post-hardcore groups Rites of Spring and Fugazi fame primarily, finds it upsetting that he is considered one of emo's founding fathers.

Emo

People who follow the emotional hardcore music scene. Emo is a shortening of emotional and in most cases refers to the style of music. Many people beleive that all emos cut themselves, this is not true. Yes, some emos cut themselves but so do some goths, punks and people who don't follow a particukar trend. Admittedly self harmers do seem drawn to the emo scene but this doesn't mean all emos self harm, most just dress and listen to music to try to seperate themselves from the herd.
Self harming is an act commited by people who either beleive they need punishment, find some releif from emotion through physical pain or suffer from low self esteem. I used to be emo, I cut myself once or twice but only as a response to the constant ridiculing I was subject to.
Chav: Hey, emo kid! Do you slit your wrists?
Emo: Not all emos do ya know *shows wrists with no

cuts* Do you see anything?
Chav: Yeah, I see you're an emo!

Chavs group: Emo! Emo!
*Chav and large group of friends laugh hysterically and emo leaves*

emo

What you can claim to be if you have a photo of yourself frowning, while your hair is in your face. This transcends race, class, creed, city, state, country, planet, gender, social status, musical tastes, elevation, religion, clothing choices, sexual orientation, internet connection, political affiliation, and whether your belly button is an "innie" or "outie"(innies are slightly more emo, though).
Me: Hey, check out that emo guy.
Jeff!: Uh, no, wrong. He’s smiling. And also, tragically, sporting a mullet. Therefore, you fail.
Me: He... he's a reverse-emo, then. He's "ome".
Jeff!: Backward hair isn't backward vocabulary, you uncompromising bastard.
Me: Sigh.

Emo

Typically an "emo" is a stereotype surrounding most tweens-teens who dress in an alternative style. Their makeup, hair, and clothes mostly define their look, as "scene" or "emo". This "alternative" fashion they conform themselves to is derived from the "in" styles most preppy and or popular females tend to wear. Along with the basic designs for the clothing "emo" symbols are added onto the clothing in order to make it appear alternative.

Emo, is mostly used as an insult, or a joke. Although the term doesn't derive from the word Emotional, it infact comes from Emotional/Hardcore music. (typically where most of today's stereotypes and subcatagories origionate) Most emo children tend to hold up some arguement that states, "Emo is a way of life..." They continue with meaningful definitions that support their arguements. However most of the filth we encounter, in life, chatrooms, schools, and websites, are just conformist vile kids who claim to be different. In all actuality these are the "preps" of the alternative world.

They claim to be different and unique. They all look the same, how does this defend their arguement?

Now for the definition: These confused children are ones who are usually middle class-upper middle class. They like to complain about their supposibly horrible lives, and about how noone could possibly understand them. They create problems and overdramatize even the smallest situation, for the purpose of fabricating a world of terror for themselves. Which typically ends in self-mutilation on small scales. They don't accept anyone unless they look, dress, act, and present themselves the way they do. They are usually annorexic or bulemic. Even though they are usually underweight they tend to think they are fat. Also they have turned a choice of sexuality into a fad.. These are the reasons why gays, lesbians, and bisexuals will never have the rights we deserve. To sum it up. They are posers, filth, attention whores, sad excuses for human beings, a trend, a fad, worthless and meaningless, and should be shot so we didn't have to hear their pitiful cries.
*flips hair* Omg guys we r so lyk unique. Emo is a way of life! Oh em geee lets write depressing poems that don't make sense about our "horrible lives".

Good idea then we can slit our wrists! YAY!!!

My girlfriend just dumped me! I'm going to kill myself!!! We were only dating for a couple days, I barely knew her, but we had such a deep connection! I want to die *cries* I'll probably just slit my wrists to My Chemical Romance seeing as I have no will to die.
