There was a small minority of Turkish people on the island of Cyprus at that time, so Ecevit thought that a good way to look after their interests would be to invade Cyprus, destroying homes and murdering tons of the Greek Cypriots that lived there, stealing a large portion of their land and naming it 'The Turkish Cypriot Republic'.
