Johnny Ramone

Guitarist for the Ramones, from their formation in 1974 to their demise in 1996. Though not the inventor of the downstroke 8th note technique, he was well-known for using this aggresive picking style that created a wall of sound. Also known for playing almost strictly Mosrite ventures II slab-body guitars, more notably his white Ventures II, and using strictly Marshall JMP100 Super Lead amps, until the amps were stolen and the band bought JCM800's in the early 80's. A conservative republican, he is known as citing president Ronald Reagan as the greatest president of his time, and at the Ramones inauguration into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he said "God bless President Bush, and God bless America" at the end of his speech. Johnny had a very strict, no-bullshit approach to guitar playing and stage presence, which infuenced the Ramones' militaristic live approach. Johnny's guitar-style influenced many guitarists after him, including James Hetfield of Metallica. Great guitarist, and a great man who died tragically from prostate cancer at the age of 55, in 2004. RIP Johnny.
"My father would get on these tangents about how he never missed a day's work. I broke my big toe the day I had to go pitch a Little League game and he's going, 'What are you - a baby? What did I do, raise a baby? You go play.' -Johnny Ramone

"People drift towards liberalism at a young age, and I always hope they change when they see how the world really is." -Johnny Ramone

Jeffrey Hyman (May 19, 1951 – April 15, 2001), better known as Joey Ramone, was the vocalist for the legendary punk rock group The Ramones. He and fellow band-mate Johnny Ramone were the only two members who stayed with the band until their retirement in 1996.

Joey RamoneJoey grew up in Forest Hills, Queens. His mother, Charlotte, encouraged an interest in music in both Joey and his brother Mitchell Hyman a/k/a Mickey Leigh. Joey was a fan of The Who, among other bands (particularly "oldies"). He took up drums at 13, playing throughout his teen years, and was originally the drummer for the Ramones. Upon Tommy Ramone's suggestion that some particular parts of the band didn't work, he became the vocalist. Joey and his bandmates attended Forest Hills High School.

He was said to be the "heart and soul" of The Ramones, and his favorite songs they had performed were often the ballads and love songs. C.J. Ramone called Joey the "hippie of the group".

After the heyday of the Ramones in the mid-70s, they remained only an underground act throughout the 80s and 90s.

Joey was distinctive due to his towering height of 6 feet 6 inches, unbelievable skinniness, and long shock of black hair that almost completely obscured his face. Joey was known to have suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Joey was born sterile, so he never fathered any children. He also never married.

Joey did not speak to guitarist Johnny Ramone for many years. The two fell out when Johnny "stole" Joey's girlfriend Linda, whom Johnny later married. They were also strongly averse to each other's politics as well, Joey being a left-leaning liberal while Johnny was a staunch conservative. The pair never made up with each other.

Joey died of lymphoma on April 15, 2001. He apparently had had the disease for a long time; he was sighted at a New York City cancer clinic that specializes in lymphoma in the mid 1990s.

Joey was the first mainstream-acknowledged punk star to die whose death was not due to a drug overdose or suicide, though his addiction issues were much publicised in various books on the Ramones. His passing was a sad shock to many, and seemed to signal the end of a generation. Countless memorials, both by fans and the rockers he influenced, followed.

His solo album Don't Worry About Me was released in 2002 and features the single "What a Wonderful World", his cover of the Louis Armstrong classic. In addition, this album featured a song entitled "Maria Bartiromo" in tribute to the popular CNBC anchor.

On November 30, 2003, Joey Ramone Place was officially named a new street in New York City. It is located alongside the block where The Ramones got their start at CBGB. His birthday is annually celebrated by rock and roll nightclubs, hosted in New York City by his mother and brother.

Joey Ramone

The influential, and iconic frontman for the RAMONES. Commonly referred to as the godfather of punk, a title he shares with Iggy Pop. His visual trademarks were, circular shades, a leather jacket, a t-shirt, sneakers, jeans, dark hair, and his height. His vocal trademark was a voice which was part snarling, part rasping, part crooning, part moaning, part growling, and part screaming. He was born in 1951 as Jeffery Hyman, to Mrs. C. Lesher, and Mr. N. Hyman. He was SUPPOSEDLY born sterile, a question which has been disputed. He attended Forest hills high with his friends, Thomas "Tommy" Erdyli, Jonathan (or was it just John) "Johnny" Cummings, and Douglas "Dee Dee" Colvin, with whom he would start the RAMONES. After Three decades of success, along with a couple changes in ranks, Joey and Johnny decided to retire. Joey recorded one last album, a solo effort as a "This is the last you'll ever hear from me" album. It was released posthumously, a year after his death from lymphoma in 2001. He never married or had children, possibly because of his disputed ability to sire children, or simply because he never wanted any. He had a street in his hometown, NYC. He, along with the other RAMONES, have been a major influence on the Punk rock (Sex pistols, The Clash, Green Day) , Modern rock (Killers), Alternative rock (U2), and Heavy metal (Iron maiden, Metallica) genres. He is survived by his brother, Mickey Leigh.
1: On my last visit to hell, I had the privilege of interviewing Joey Ramone. First, I asked what he would have done if he hadn't died. He said:"I would host a nighttime radio show in New York, just like I do in the afterlife."
2: I then asked Joey Ramone about his influences, and he said "The Beatles, The Ronnetes, The Mc5, Sex pistols, Clash, Motörhead, Iron F***in maiden, Metallica, Green day, etc."
3. Joey Ramone. Ah, even in the afterlife, He still has a sense of humor.
4.I also asked Joey (Ramone) if he was sterile. "EXCUSE ME?!Even if I was, do you think I'd TELL YOU?! And maybe my 'infertility' has nothing to do with me not having any known kids? It's none of your *#%^*^ business anyways. Can't we talk about other +%#% please? Like, do you miss me?" "Yeah, it's much quieter on earth now. You miss earth?" "Not as much as I used to."
5. Joey Ramone never did answer that one question. And it seems he never will. So for his sake, don't talk about that $&@; because it makes him feel uncomfortable.
