Placebo Antivirus

Also called Placebo Antimalware.

An antivirus program that "detects" fake malware to make it seem like it works.

Origin: A placebo is something that you are told works and seems to be working but actually doesn't do anything.

Most, if not all, antivirus programs were placebo antivirus programs until there was a surge in viruses made by people who decompiled their code.

A mom making out with her "stepdaughter" in a porno. It's not actually her stepdaughter, though. The Porn Placebo, is that she's having sexual relations with her family member.

An impressive looking device or scheme, that in fact, does nothing. It is commonly believed that pedestrian controlled traffic signals and signs warning that police monitor speeders by aircraft, are blatant examples.

Why are you pushing the "close" door on this elevator? It's just a mechanical placebo.
