Before the election of Abraham Lincoln a collection of southern US states became fearful of the growing abolition movement and upon the election of Lincoln to the presidency, chose to break away from the US to form their own government, dedicated to preserving and expanding the institution of slavery. After 4 long years of bloody battle however, they were soundly defeated and soon reintegrated into the US. Even with that defeat however, the veterans of the Confederacy successfully painted the CSA in a brighter light, creating the “Lost Cause” myth. Today the Confederate States are seen in a much harsher light and the major controversy of the statues that the veterans put up is still being fought in the streets of the deep south today.
