It's unnecessary if you're bike is properly maintained. The sundamaged dork disc is a telltale sign of a newbie rider.
Dude, you don't need that dork disc if your derailleurs are properly indexed. If you're not using training wheels, chuck it in the trash.

They saw the same kid that watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Barney the Purple Dinosaur and shit like that (Pokemon too) thinking that he/she had now turned the tables on the world and all the kids that once bullied him/her that he/she whined about.
