When an individual (quite often a man's significant other) asks for something, but when ridiculed about the preposterous nature of the request, they begin to claim they were joking about it. Whereas if you had said you were willing to fulfil the request, they would have happily one through with it.
"Jamie can I have that £3000 ring from that jewellery shop?"
"Sophie are you out of your mind? No I can't afford it!"
"I was only joking!"
"No you were ground-baiting."
"Sophie are you out of your mind? No I can't afford it!"
"I was only joking!"
"No you were ground-baiting."
