spelling alphabet

Not to be confused with "phonetic alphabet", this kind of alphabet is a set of words used to represent the letters of an alphabet in oral communication, especially over a two-way radio or telephone. The words chosen, i.e. Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, etc., are meant to represent the letters sound sufficiently different from each other to clearly differentiate them.

Whenever I’m on the radio with my team, I always use the spelling alphabet to avoid confusion—like saying 'Alfa, Bravo, Charlie' instead of just letters.

trademarked spelling

The practice of spelling a word incorrectly on purpose in order to make it easier to find it on the internet or in an internet search. The practice seems to have come about only since the commercialization of the internet.

There is a big new shopping mall called the mall of Millenia and they spell the word millennia incorrectly on purpose which I would call a trademarked spelling since they can trademark Millenia and call it their own word.

Any of a large amount of spells from the Magic: the Gathering card game that destroys a creature or removes it from the game, especially at the most frustrating time possible in a game.

I finally get a creature on the board, and the next thing I know, BOOM - kill spell!

Good Speller

A person who is an angry virgin and as such has plenty of free time and an uptight disposition. They frequently correct the spelling of others for no reason other than to feel superior whilst looking and sounding like a douche to those observing.

This douchebaggery adds to the long odds of them ever having sex and thus the vicious circle continues.

"Your friend Antony is a bit of a douche"
"Yeah, he's a really good speller"

Paranoid Speller

A person so bad at spelling they can’t believe they actually spelled a word correctly. Symptoms of this paranoia are changing the spelling of a word in question to trigger the spell check for confirmation. Or alternately stopping everything and checking an obviously non-misspelled word at dictionary.com.

“Hey did John ever finish typing up that paper?”
“Yeah but it took him forever, he’s such a Paranoid Speller.”
