Cattywampus

Ah this word.I remember my literature teacher trying to explain this word to my class.Anyways cattywapus comes from the word catamount which means “cat of the mountain” or “mountain lion”.The word first appeared in 1834 as the adverb “catawampusly. I will give you some examples for the multiple definitions and uses of this word.

-In disarray or disorder
-Measure carefully before cutting, or the entire structure will turn out cattywampus.

-not lined up or not arranged correctly, or diagonally
An example of something cattywampus are the positions of the items on the top of a coffee table after a two year old has been playing with them and moving them around.

Sorry for the weird observation, but your tacky Christmas tie is cattywampus.
