An abbreviation for Christmas
Historically, X has been used as an abbreviation for Christ as it comes from the Greek letter chi. It was used by Christians themselves, firstly to hide from persecution and then as a common abbreviation.
Today, it is mainly employed by corporate brands who do not want to use the word Christmas as they think it could be offensive to non-Christian customers: asking their retail employees to use it or using it in their ads.
This has led to some debates as Christians can feel like brands try to remove Christ from Christmas (and often rightly so as it is currently the most common use of it), while the abbreviation itself was invented and used by Christians themselves through History.
