Political Appearance

When your significant other has a party that will be attended by people that you either don't know, or don't care about. You don't want to go, but you go anyway to safe face and/or give the illusion that you don't hate them.

Wife: "You can't do that Saturday, we have that Scrubs-themed costume party at the Smiths' that evening."

You: "I'll go, but I'm only making a political appearance."

Coworker (sarcastically): "So, I'll see you at the holiday party, eh?"

You: "I dunno, I overheard my boss talking about possible promotions. I think it's worth at least making a political appearance."

appearances matter

A wistful notion from the recent-yet-distant time when people saw each other.

Glancing into her closet, filled with lovingly-chosen clothing she no longer wore, slipping on her plastic coat, her mask and rubber gloves to go 'shopping', she recalled what her mother had taught her when she was young, that appearances matter, and wondered when it would be true again.

A superficial way to judge somebody if you're going to judge somebody.

Once she had looked at the guy's spirit instead of his appearance, she realized he started to look more like a legend than an ugly toothless loser like she thought at first. Had she ever tried to fight a legend before, or was she too busy tending to her 12 year old short king all day and night to fight a legend?
