Metalcore

In the 90s, hardcore bands started to infuse metal into their sound - some examples being Earth Crisis, Integrity and Vision of Disorder. This sound was known at the time as “metallic hardcore”. The most commercially successful of this era being Hatebreed. Eventually, this genre became known as “metalcore”. In the late 90s/early 00s, members of the hardcore scene also became fans of melodic death metal bands, such as In Flames and (especially) At the Gates. The original metalcore sound was combined with melodic death metal riffs and clean vocals (usually in the chorus), and the most popular style of metalcore was born. This is actually called melodic metalcore, and besides the first few bands who originated and popularised this sound, has little to nothing to do with the original metalcore bands, who came from the hardcore scene and still had a lot of hardcore influence in their music. There are still bands in metalcore who play a sound similar to the 90s bands. A few examples being Knocked Loose, Kublai Khan TX, Boundaries and Incendiary. These bands have roots in the hardcore scene and you can hear the hardcore influence still in their music.
Uneducated metal elitist: “Metalcore is awful, it’s crap for emo and scene kids, Bring Me the Horizon make me sick!!”

Hardcore kid who also likes metal: “That’s melodic metalcore, real metalcore is Earth Crisis and Integrity! You metalheads are sooo uneducated, now go back listening to your racist little black metal!!!”

metalcore kid

how to spot a metalcore kid:

dress: tight, faded fashioncore band shirts (most likely to have the band name in front of a pool of blood) tight, faded/ripped jeans that cost way too much, bandana around neck or mouth, white studded belt.

appearance: shaved head/mid length hair covering eye, stupid looking tunnels in earlobes the sixe of your pinky, lip and/or eyebrow piercings optional.

music: Usually whatever faux metal/hardcore band it's cool to like at the time. Nowadays, it's Norma Jean, Underoath, Atreyu, etc.

dance: Hardcore dancing (Swinging your arms and legs around in a vain attempt to look HxC)

attitude: An air of great superiority due to their apparently "flawless" taste in music and fashion.

Screen name: includes too many X's, words like "gun", "bang", and "kill". Often including their current favorite band's name.

Known to take oddly angled myspace pictures that all look the same, edit them in photoshop, then post 20 of them on their HxC pimped out Myspace.
