crepe hanger

In days of old when the dead were laid out in the parlour of the family home, people, either out of respect or superstition, draped all the mirrors and windows of the house with black crepe. Professional "funeral" operators would begin to prepare for this ahead of time as they noted that there were local people nearing death's door. This gave birth to the term, "crepe hanger" to people who are compulsive worriers, anxious about things that have not yet happened. This "tradition" also gave birth to the use of black crepe for the manufacture of ladies’ mourning dresses, men’s hat bands and arm bands, and funeral wreaths

Mothers who are constantly worried and over anxious about their children, husbands etc when they don't get home on time, and in their mind's eye see them in an accident, hospitalized, dead and themselves standing over a gravesite could be considered "crepe hangers."

hanger-on

A hanger-on is a person often without any friends who follows around popular groups in for example school or at parties/clubs etc. trying to become part of that group.

You're in a group of 6 people, only 5 of them are your friends the other person just follows the group all the time, he's in that case the hanger-on.

Monkey Hangers

Name given to people from the town of Hartlepool in the North East of England. The reason being during the Napoleonic Wars (around the 1800s) a monkey washed up on the beach at Hartlepool. The unfortunate primate was tried and executed because the locals thought it was French. This is referred to with some misplaced pride now as the town's football club's mascot is called H'Angus the Monkey.

"Hey, did you hear those Monkey Hangers elected their football mascot as their mayor?"

"Well, that's what happens when you live on the wrong side of the Pennines."
