What Mary's brain had regarding da mischievous-antics possibly of her woolly little four-legged friend when she hid him under her desk, but then didn't "take any steps" to make sure that HE wouldn't "take steps" to follow after her when she went up to perform a task at the blackboard!

Fortunately Miss Kimball was a good-natured understanding soul who understood dat little kids may likely make innocent-but-embarrassing mistakes, and so she didn't blame Mary for her lambnesia; she just gently asked her to put said tiny adorable creature outside for da remainder of da class-time.
