Anime is the japanese word for animation. in the west it usually refers to the japanese way of animating, (often with large eyes, sweat drops for embarrasment etc, but not always) there are genres within anime, just the same as any other entertainment type.
it is often heavily edited and 'dumbed down' when dubbed by america, as it is assumed americans will not understand.
the subbed versions are pretty much a straight translation, so it is better if you want the original storyline.

Get the animemug. Anime is essentially Japanese animation, but it is also a word the Japanese derived from French to just describe animation in general. It is very popular in the states, and it has a wide range of age groups that it targets, from young children to young adults. Anime and manga have various styles, some better than others. The fanbase is very large, and at times, very annoying, but it really is an interesting phenomena.
Japanese animation and comics are very interesting. However, that is not to say that some American animation and most American comics aren't.

Get the Animalmug. Translation: Animation
Definition: 1.A form of Japanese animation. Not all Japanese animations are anime, just saying. Anime, in my opinion, has to be in some way created, worked on, drawn, or written by an actual Japanese oriented person, and thus anime wannabes can never really be 'anime.'
Not all animes are sparkly happy, heart shaped faces with huge eyes stuff. Some anime is really hardcore. Really. Anime is for all ages, though some of the better ones are not suitable for all ages. The lenght of anime series can range from 12 episodes (Which are often never dubbed and sometimes put on DVD. Some of these are the best.) to over 200 episodes or more. (Naruto and Pokemon are the longest animes I've seen, with Naruto having a whopping 220 episodes and a sequel to the series.)
There are three main types of anime, strike that four. One for children and younger audience, etc. Then there's shounen. This is directed towards males, but is not for males. There's a lot of action, often well proportioned, less sparkly, probably aren't a lot of chibis. Then there's shoujo, again directed towards girls, but not for girls. Shoujo has more of a definite line rather than shounen. You can easily tell a shoujo anime when you're watching one. Comedy, romance, achieving dreams & goals, from most that I've seen there's always at least one really attractive character.
2. The show version of manga. Don't mix these two up infront of fans who may be a bit OCD. I often correct them instantly and show then the difference.
2a. Just another thing that's often confused with anime...Hentai. Technically, hentai is just a term for sexually themed anime, so don't mix that up. Hentai really means 'pervert' or 'perverse.' I really just call those animes pornography.
