Bill mentioning a problem he is having regardless of what other people are saying is a fall-back complaint.

Joe: How was your day?
Bill: Fine. Do you know why is the bus always late?

Mary: Hello Bill.
Bill: Hey. The bus is late again.

Dave: Talk to you tomorrow Bill.
Bill: Okay! I hope the bus wont be late.

Jim: Can you give me Mary's number?
Bill: Did you know the bus is always late?

Fall off the grid

To (seemingly) disappear from the face of the earth
Disappear to a place one would be very unlikely to be found.
What happened to Tom? I haven't talked to him since ten years ago.

Last time I heard, he got caught up in a drug-related arrest. Somehow escaped from prison and was forced to fall off the grid, probably somewhere in the Amazon Rainforest living with them Natives by now.
