When someone outedly decides to fake a tragic event or intense situation, to draw attention to themselves.

e.g. a content creator fakes his death, then posts his video (desperate for views) and everyone automatically clicks, because they thought he was dead.

Jeff: DUDE! RonaldMinecraft posted a new video, I thought he was dead?

Mike: Yeah, he was attention-faking.

Attention Economy

An economic system in which human attention is the primary scarce resource, and platforms, media, and advertisers compete to capture, hold, and monetize it. In the attention economy, content is free because attention is the product: users pay with their time, focus, and data. Algorithms optimize for engagement, not accuracy or well‑being. The attention economy drives outrage, sensationalism, and polarization because those are what capture attention. It shapes not just what we see but how we think, turning cognition into a commodity.

Example: “The headline wasn’t true, but it kept her scrolling for hours. The attention economy doesn’t reward truth; it rewards whatever holds the eyeball.”

Attention Market

The competitive marketplace where platforms, creators, advertisers, and algorithms vie for shares of human attention. In the attention market, users’ focus is the currency; clicks, likes, shares, and time‑on‑site are the metrics. Creators optimize for “stickiness,” platforms auction attention to advertisers, and algorithms learn what keeps users engaged. The attention market has no inherent interest in quality, truth, or user welfare—only in maximizing the quantity and duration of attention captured.

Attention Consumerism

An economic and cultural system where human attention is the primary currency. Platforms and media compete not for money but for seconds of focus, which they then sell to advertisers. Attention consumerism fragments concentration, rewards outrage and novelty, and treats sustained thought as a loss of revenue. It transforms every user into a product whose attention is mined, packaged, and auctioned.

Example: “She intended to read for ten minutes, but the infinite scroll consumed two hours—attention consumerism, where her focus was the inventory and the platform was the shoplifter.”

Center of Attention Syndrome

Someone suffering from COAS is so pre-occupied with themselves and their issues that they have a hard time paying attention to anyone else. An extreme version of being self-centered narcissists, sufferers of COAS frequently don't know that they suffer from COAS, but they would love the idea that they suffered from an illness.
