Possibly borrowed from meteorology. A cellular storm "goes linear" when it turns into more of a squall line (or merges with an existing storm) -- i.e., that it's going to turn into a big black line of death. (from stormtrack.org).

I have a sense that there should also be a nuclear physics metaphor, but I don't know it.

Non-Linear Selling 

Selling in pairs or other combinations and for more than one year at a time, thereby decreasing the absolute number of deals required to sell out your inventory as well as increasing your efficiency and productivity.

If there are 200 signs in an arena and you sell them to sponsors in pairs for a term of two years each then you only need to make 50 deals per year to sell out your inventory instead of 200 per year--thus, you have reduced your workload by 75%. If you can further increase the number of multi-year deals for pairs of signs you can do per annum then your sales will increase at an ever increasing rate-- that is non-linear selling.

We caught the
Flori-cal linear induction tube at noon in Miami and 3 hours later we arrived in San Diego at noon local. We went to the zoo then caught a bite to eat at horton plaza and made it in time for an 8pm curtain at the San Diego Opera
It let out at 11pm so we made it back to the station for some drinks then we caught the 2am local flori-cal for a 3 hour ride back to Miami and arrived there at 8am local time!
