Futch and the futch scale were created online by reddit lesbians as a joke. However, the design was taken seriously and spread through the internet which spread misinformation about stone butch and high femme identities and made futch seem like a legit identifier when it's in actuality, a mockery of femme and butch history. Stone butch doesn't inherently mean hyper masculinity and high femme doesnt inherently mean hyper femininity. Stone identities refer to intimate boundaries some femmes and butches have during intercourse or in everyday life. Futch isnt a genuine identity because while femme and butch have history, culture and meaning beyond clothes and appearance, futch is simply a lazy combination of the two that disregards the history and culture behind those identifiers. It's totally valid to not be femme or butch, but futch was started as a joke and isnt a valid lesbian identifier. Non aligned lesbians are hella valid and so are chapstick lesbians!! Androgynous lesbians and lesbians who don't fit into femme or butch in general are great! But calling yourself futch is an insult to butch and femme culture. And if you're not a lesbian and you use lesbian identifiers, you're even more insulting to our culture, please educate yourself!! Bi and pan women have their own identifiers (stag, doe and tomcat) the futch scale is fun to use as a meme but at the end of the day, that's all it is, a joke.
