1. name given by mainstream media to a type of radio-controlled consumer gadget known to RC community as multicopter (not to be confused with real drones in use by the military to conduct aerial surveillance or air strikes). Multicopters can carry small payloads like small video cameras for recording or for first-person-view (FPV) while flying. Common multicopters come with four (4) or six (6) identically sized rotors.
A civilian got arrested in the Capitol area for flying a drone in a restricted airspace.

A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle); usually with four counterrotating props and frequently sporting a camera for taking aerial photographs and shooting aerial video.

A quadcopter that you can purchase in a store or online is often frequently referred to as a drone even if it requires constant manipulation by a ground-based pilot; a true drone can be completely autonomous and require no intervention by the pilot.
I flew my drone under the Juneau-Douglas bridge but it lost signal and went blub blub blub all the way to the bottom of Gastineau Channel with all of the bowling balls that were lobbed over the side of that bridge in the 1950s and 1960s.

I was having a conversation with my friend and I didn't realize my girlfriend was drowning in on me when he quietly asked me if I wanted a cigarette. I whispered no thanks; and she yells from the other room, "your smoking" again and I yell at her "STOP DRONING" in on my conversation and not you have something to say when you didn't even hear what I said.
