Alongside that he was succesful domestically and ruled over the Byzantine empire during it's peak of power. He was a great general who while campaigning gave him no privileges over the standard soldier which led to the army loving him. He would also found the Varangian guard which was far more loyal than the Praetorian guard. He was probably the greatest Byzantine emperor.
