Old Welsch custom of giving a gift of food with one serving missing.
The “Promise” of the gesture was that this gift would not be given if it were not at least good enough for the person giving the gift. The missing serving was presumed to be used to confirm the quality of the item and evaluate possible improvements.
The custom is thought to have originated in the mid-seventeenth century.

A promise that is made to be kept forever. No matter what the promise will never be broken. It is used for people who have trust issues and people who are simps for their girl/boyfriend. Never think someone is lying when they said forever promise.

An ancient custom of serving guests an offering of food with a portion removed.
The custom served dual purposes. Symbolically, it was meant to indicate that nothing would be offered which was not equal to the servers own.
Practically, it allowed for a taste test to gauge the quality of the ingredients and preparation.

Our host explained that the pie was missing a piece to show that the house tested the pie to confirm it was good enough for you, which is the Scottish promise.

Unfortunately the Promise brand has been discontinued. We were happy to have been a part of your family meals over the years and hope that you consider continuing the mealtime tradition with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Original which has been certified by the American Heart Association’s® (AHA) Heart-Check Food Certification Program.
