Modeled after the term used in Biology, where genus of Protozoa consists of unicellular organisms that do not have a definite shape

"Amoeba" is generally used for one of two things, outside of biology;

1. A word used after another person does something respectable

2. A word used after another person does something to make you not want to live on the same planet as them
