A sentient is a living creature, whether it's habitat be land, air, water, or a combination of these. Sentients are sensitive to light, heat etc but most importantly they can feel pain.
Humans, cod, turkeys, crabs, pigs, dogs, rats etc. are all sentient creatures.

Girl - I'm going to get a sentient for my birthday.
Boy - Eh?
Girl - It's the polite way to say pet, pet is so last century.
Boy - What sort of animal will you chose? I've got a dog - he's great.
Girl - Well I've thought a long time about it and I've decided to get a rescued rat.

Sensimental

A subjective statement (or headline, or quotation) that is both sensationalised and sentimental but almost always devoid of the necessary evidence, credence or semblance of fact for it not to be regarded as useless.

The Five Year Strategy only referred to this issue a few times, on these occasions it was only a sensimental reference and essentially worthless.

'I won't let other people decide my family's future'; a purely sensimental quote.

'Immigrants storming our beaches for D-Day Part II'; a likely sensimental headline for a tabloid newspaper.

When a certain smell gives you feelings of transcendence. I.e. nostalgia for a time long passed triggered by smell.

gross sentimentality

A new mental illness in which the afflicted person maintains relationships with people from the past who no longer wish to have anything to do with them. People having this affliction should seek professional help. This is a mild form of stalking and the afflicted person does not have their current emotional needs met and tries to console his or herself by looking into their past. These people also like to collect things from their youth and adolesence. Like an old salesman they go over their old leads (only the quality ones) and try to find something of value in the past, either acceptance, forgiveness, or re-assurance. John is a real mess. Everytime his life gets tough he calls his ex-girlfriends and feels like he is right back with them even when that chick hasn't heard from him in years. I think he has gross sentimentality.
