A referee is a person who monitors a sporting event to make sure that the rules of the game are observed and obeyed by the participants. However, the refs usually just end up becoming the scapegoats for the players' shortcomings and are abused by players and spectators alike.

Soccer Player: Dude, that referee was a total retard! Nice call, fucktard!

Person: Shut up. How would you like to try to keep a fair game going only to have half of the field curse at you and vandalize your car after the game?

Facebook Referee

Someone who breaks up stupid facebook fights. Usually someone who is tired of people using facebook to argue and would just like to see the two combatants fall in deep holes. Usually a person who doesn't know the the people arguing that well, and so will not face backlash from either of them later on for breaking up the facebook fight.

One who may look professional enough to play the sport being observed, but in actuality may only know the sport from when they were a fat, lazy child and watched it on TV. They may make "bogus" calls if you will that relate nothing to the given action. 90% of the time these calls are merely illusions.

tapback referee

Person in a group chat who passive aggressively steers the conversation using reactions such as "Ha Ha" or "Thumbs Down"

Sam is such a tapback referee. He always "ha ha(s)" any cheap shots in the group chat to keep things ridiculous.
