All governments that have claimed to be communist, were led by communists and have functioned in a manner consistent with communist idealology were not real communist governments.
This is because they invariably fail (typically in a truly dramatic fashion) and in a true communist society, no one is allowed to fail (except the grain harvest).
This results in a form of communist duality, whereby a state is only communist when it is successful and is retroactively stripped of the label when it ultimately fails. These failures are usually explained away as being the result of intervention from foreign capitalists, the CIA or any other bogeyman that deflects from the absolute failure of the communist state. These deflections are usually an example of Stalin's law.

Get the Communism mug.A socialist theory advocated by Karl Marx in which the proletariat (working class) tried to attain rights, and fair wages. By abolishing bourgeois (middle class business owners) property the proletariat hoped for equality.
During the Industrial Revolution the proletariat (lower class) were forced to switch from the work they were used to doing, agriculture and farming, to working in factories for the bourgeois (middle class busines owners). They worked sometimes 16-18 hour days and didn't even get paid enough to live. (Which is why from 8 years old and up children were dropping out of school to work full time in the hopes their family wouldn't starve that day. Although kids often got paid 1/10 of what an adult did.) As machines were getting easier to use more people had the skills necessary (none...) to work. Because of this the number of proletariat continued to increase and so the laws made for/by the bourgeois didn't apply to the lower class which was by far, the majority. Karl Marx had a theory and this theory was communism. Marx belief was that by abolishing bourgeois property it would level out the playing field so the proletariat had the chance to prosper, and be functioning members of society.

From this idea was elaborated a doctrine whereby a Socialist state would be established that would in time subsume the economic structure of society into itself. At this point the State itself would wither and the new ideal Communist society would emerge. It's surely a beautiful idea on paper, and may even work with small tribal bands ... but just try to apply it to a society made of millions of us naked apes and see what happens.
Marx incidentally suggested that agrarian societies would be more likely to develop in time along such lines; the adoption of Communist doctrine by industrial societies like Leninist-Stalinist Russia may arguably be in itself a perversion of Marx's idea.
