When someone answers a simple question with an in depth technical description that is far more information than you wanted to know about the subject. The response may or may not answer the original question.

The pendulum is propelled by the pulley and is connected to a special gear called an escapement. The gears then spin the hands of the clock at the appropriate ratios to show seconds, minutes, and hours accordingly."
